Ego Juggling
Everyone is talking about the amount of talent the Miami Heat are going to have to control. Miami Heat now are solid favorites to win the east with a bucket of ego to go with it.
Tony Mejia mentions in this article:
Credit Payton for saying all the right things, and prioritizing a ring over anything else. Slap him on the back for signing for the veteran’s minimum, $1.1 million dollars, when he could have asked to chew up some of the Heat’s still-available mid-level exception. But don’t be naive and think it’s not going to eat him up to be playing reduced minutes.
What seems to be obvious I think will turn into pleasantly surprising with Payton this year. He wants a ring to go with his glove before he hangs up his tanktop. Payton will do what he has to do and if that means eating chair, he’ll do it. Payton is mature. Lets not get overboard here.
Antoine Walker, James Posey and Udonis Haslem will somehow have to share time at forward, and while three-man forward rotations are common in the NBA, losing a starting role to Walker would have to irk Haslem, who was the ultimate soldier in last year’s breakout season.
Don’t be surprised if you see a two man rotation with Zo and Walker rotating with Haslem and Shaq. I’ve always been a fan of Antoine’s game and I think he will do very well for the Heat if he keeps his head in check. With this rotation, Walker will get more touches due to Zo’s “over the hill” offensive skills (I still love ya Zo) and his all star “I’ll block your ass everytime you come at me” defense.
Another thing we have to see is if Haslem is going to perform like he did last year. He was stellar for the Heat in all areas, but he was particularly excellent when we did the run and gun. You will probably see Jason Williams in with him. While Payton and Shaq run the half court. Of course DWade will be in when he can breathe.
Sixteen players are already under contract, and there is talk that another, potentially Rodney White, Casey Jacobsen or Jason Kapono, could be added to help address the team’s glaring lack of perimeter shooting.
Out of those 3 I’d lean towards Kapono, but would be happy with Jacobsen too.
